Exhibition space – 85,000 SF

Overview

Suburban Showplace approached Fika Architects with an exciting vision for a new 85,000 SF addition to their venue, aiming to create a versatile indoor/outdoor event space that could adapt to a variety of functions year-round. The goal was to design a dynamic environment that blurred the lines between interior and exterior spaces, enhancing the venue’s capacity for hosting events in a range of settings.

The design concept centers around a striking roof canopy that seamlessly integrates with the existing building, creating a cohesive flow between the existing and new structures. However, in a bold departure from traditional event venues, the addition was conceived without solid exterior walls. Instead, the space features innovative canvas walls that can be opened or closed depending on the desired use.

When the walls are open, the space transforms into a spacious outdoor event area, offering unobstructed views and a connection to the surrounding landscape. When the canvas walls are closed, the area becomes an enclosed indoor venue, maintaining a climate-controlled environment suitable for year-round events. This adaptability allows the venue to host a wide variety of events, from large gatherings and concerts to more intimate functions, all while maintaining a strong connection to its surroundings.

The design captures a balance of flexibility, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, creating a unique venue that responds to both the practical needs of event hosting and the visual demands of a modern, open-air experience.
